First things first: Start with setting the space for yourself. To make your “sometimes lonely” house feel like a home and a safe haven, there’s an easy trick. Set up the basics:
1- Light: A dim, soft yellow light or only the candles at night can make your flat much cozier and turn your space into a calmer one.
2- Smell: Put on your favorite perfume on, use an air-freshener, use essential oils or again, light a scented candle. Smell is a strong sense that is directly connected with memories. Make your space a memorable one for the positive vibes to come.
3- Sound: Are you a metal music fan? Well, maybe it’s best to try something softer every now and then. It is also a great idea for anxiety to turn white noise on by finding a list on your Spotify
Sometimes, it’s all it takes to feel much better. Of course, considering that your place is tidy as well as it will help you against feeling overstimulated. Now, let’s get to the activities you can do at home, and rest assured, I won’t say the usual things like meditating, yoga or reading a book.
1- Have a Celebrity Read You a Bedtime Story
There’s no bad time to be a child again. Doesn’t matter if you would like to get back to your childhood or not, bedtime stories are calming. Add to it your celebrity crush’s voice. Voila!: Here’s the Youtube channel for you.
2- Prepare an Indoor Picnic
Make yourself a hot wine, pop-corn, your favorite cookies or anything that is more sophisticated if you will and are not too lazy to try. Put them in a basket for the extra realistic touch and sit on your blanket while eating and doing any other acitivites like watching your favorite show, just listening to music or writing your new blog post. Oh, you could even warm marshmallows?
3- Create a Confidence & Gratitude Box
Once I mentioned my therapist how I feel very confident and find many things I love about myself when I’m in a good mood and feeling well. Sometimes, however, it’s very difficult and I find myself in a pitfall of continuously questioning and struggling to come up with anything positive. What I ended up doing is to create a confidence box, with all the notes and small gifts my friends and loved ones gave to me, a big list of the things I like about myself and the things I’m grateful for. I went a step further and added some soothing toys as well. You can also turn it into a general feel-good-box to open when the hard times hit.
4- Do Shadow Work
Oh, just how much I liked this one. It helps you understand different parts of you that stay hidden and gives you freedom to get to know and free them, and heal them. While you can do it with your therapist too, I really liked “The Shadow Work Journal” of Keila Shaheen. It is such a well thought one, but I’m sure you can also find different resources. Just give it a try and see how therapeutic this is.
5- Karaoke & Dance Party
For karaoke, you can try an app like Smule or just find your favorite songs on Youtube. It’s even better if you already have a karaoke microphone. After all, there’s no one to tell you to stop the voice. :D One other idea is to check the “Just Dance” videos on Youtube to dance along and break a sweat in such a fun way.
